All the Best! from Jim and all the staff at Harvey’s
Hello wonderful friends
Hello fellow feasters,
Christmas is just around the corner and I started thinking about traditions. Growing up in our house it was…citrus stuffed turkey! Now I don’t know how my mom cooked it, as she didn’t pass the recipe on. What we do is prepare our favorite turkey recipe, then instead of filling the cavity with stuffing we place halved Harvey’s oranges and grapefruit along with lots of herbs and butter inside the turkey. There’s lots of basting involved and the aroma is intoxicating!
Remember that citrus fruit is also a great variation on all the traditional casseroles and heavy side dishes.
Of course, you can make a citrus salad with greens and cut up Harvey’s oranges and grapefruit. If you are offering a variety of beverages to your guests you could make Frozen Citrus Slice Coolers. Here’s the recipe:
Ingredients: red and white Harvey’s grapefruit, Harvey’s oranges, lemonade, iced tea, cranberry juice or any other favorite beverage. How to Make: Cut citrus crosswise into 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick slices. Cut each slice into quarters. Lay citrus wedges on a baking sheet, cover with plastic and freeze about 1-1/2 hours or until hard. Remove citrus slices with a metal spatula and place in a plastic resealable bag. Use citrus wedges to cool beverages (kids also like to suck on them before dinner).
Well, Trish is sending me to the store for something, so I’ve gotta run. We’ll talk soon. Don’t forget to send some citrus to your friends out of state. They WILL appreciate it!
Fall has arrived and with it delicious Harvey’s citrus fruit. We’ve had a cool weather snap, just in time to sweeten up the early oranges and grapefruit. Did you know that once a tree has flowered it takes 5 to 18 months for the fruit to develop and ripen, depending on the variety and growing area?
I love my morning walks in the groves. The trees are pungent with the fresh fruit scent and it makes my mouth water! I can’t imagine what it was like back in the early days of citrus farming, but I bet they checked their groves every day like I do. Although there is more technology nowadays, technology doesn’t grow fruit or watch the trees. We still rely on Mother Nature to do her part with sunshine, rain, and the perfect climate.
The photo above shows our early fruit stand in 1939.
The stores open next Tuesday, October 25 so stop by and pick up some of our newly picked oranges and grapefruit. We’d love to see you and have a chat.
Have a great day!
